About the Event

Part of Harrogate Cenotaph's Centenary Commemoration Event.

GIs ‘OVER THERE’ TO THE BEATLES - Derek Shelmerdine.

Derek's second talk covers how popular music evolved, from the American GIs arriving in the UK to the birth of the most famous band in rock’n’roll history – The Beatles. The American soldiers brought a whole new culture to the UK. This led to big bands and crooners giving way to the new popular music of trad jazz, skiffle, British rock’n’roll and the birth of The Beatles. Heralding a completely new age of pop music and culture.
